Brian Shields began carving in 1996 in Whitianga and, after a period of machine carving, learnt the precision of hand tools with Ian Thorne at "The Bone Studio." With new skills and inspiration, he moved to Christchurch and setup "Kiwi Bone Carving" where he taught thousands of backpackers to "carve-their-own." During this time, he worked with Tahu Jacomb and developed his pounamu carving skills.
A carver who will use any interesting medium, Brian has progressed more into sculpture and one-off originals where he can express more of his relationship with people and nature.
Always willing to improvise and innovate, Brian does commissions in any medium to your needs and to a high standard expected by collectors and those after quality taonga.
